Last week I was looking at my tires when I noticed that the entire outside of the tire was worn (Shown above). Now I need a new set of tires, and evidently I got the most expensive ones I could’ve gotten (Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's). And this is far from the only tire related issue we had.
A few weeks ago my dad found a nail in his tire, and because the car will be tracked soon we just couldn’t get it patched, which it couldn’t have anyway. A few months before that, my mom’s Cadenza had a nail in one of her new tires. Before that, my dad’s last Mustang had a tire get slashed from a piece of metal on the road. And then once I got my new tires about a year and a half ago, I got a nail in an un-patchable place.
So now I’m out about 500 because it’s obvious I need an alignment and I’m going to just get two tires. The only place that can get both the tires and alignment is a place that tried to rip me off 1200 dollars for simple repairs to make things that much better. It kills me, 8 thousand on these tires, the rears still look great. Which means the alignment issue was recent or my Ford dealer never did rotate them back in January. I don’t think I can drive much more on them to. Gotta love cars. Here’s another.
EDIT: I also should say, I got new tie rods, ball joints and alignment done a year and a half ago along with the new tires. It seems strange that the tires wore so quick all the sudden. They stayed looking brand new all in 2014. Is it possible something else is wrong?

I <3 my A/S3 tires, but god damn if they can’t find all the nails.

my tires look like yours ever since I started autocrossing. it doesn’t mean they need replaced.

I love mine to, but you’re right. Making matters worse, I live in a newly developing community. You can find nails everywhere. It’s insane.

The tires I had before these did the same thing and they got down to the threading really quickly. Considering I do a lot more driving right now, I’m not taking a chance.

That was when I had first gotten the tires. There’s no nails in them as of now as far as I know... Also these are on the front and I’m not sure that’s worth the time and effort of throwing them on the back. I have way to much class/work things going on unfortunately.

I posted it last week but it could be worse:
Unknown co-worker’s car. I’m still shuddering that people think driving around on tires like these is at all reasonable.

That’s horrifying. I was nervous when I just had one thread show up on my last set of tires!

Front or rear? Both sides? Positive camber is really strange, may need more than just alignment to fix.

Front. It’s the right side in the picture. The left front isn’t as bad but is showing some signs of more wear on the side already. About a year and a half ago I got new tie rods, ball joints and an alignment. It just puzzles me that the car could go out of alignment so quick. Unless I’ve been hitting some really nasty bumps and not noticing. What else might need fixing?

Every time I’ve purchased tires, I’ve gotten nails in the sidewalls after about 8-9000km. It’s not even the cost that make me the most upset, it’s the uneven wear. (even though 8000km isn’t too much). Usually $150/tire on my 3.

It seems like you have similar luck. Frustrating isn’t it? Especially when you’re about to spend a lot of money on other things.

$500 for two tires AND and alignment?
Jealous. I’m paying close to that for 1 rear tire, unmounted.

Could be bad bushings or something is bent. I don’t know what kind of specs Mustangs run for camber and caster, so I guess there’s a chance it’s normal but I doubt it. If it were my car and everything were in spec, I would increase camber (or decrease ad it were, make it more negative) by about .5 degrees. But I would see where everything is at first. When they give you an alignment print out feel free to post it or reply to me here and I’ll give you my opinion.

Yup. About 170 per tire, 80 for an alignment and I’m figuring in installation as well. I’m more jealous of my dad though, his 275's on his Roush are about the same price as my tire. The downside is that they’re made in China (Cooper RS3's). But they seem well made, no issues and good performance. That’s nearly 200 dollars less than MPSS PER tire. Crazy.

Well this definitely isn’t normal or it would have happened sooner. But I guess I’ll take it in and see what happens. Thanks.

Pilots are virtually solid on the “outside” tread, are you sure there’ a problem? Look at some new ones to confirm. That said, you are easily at half the life at 8k probably. I wouldnt think fronts and rears are same size to rotate anyway....

Well, an older version of the tire but the A/S Plus that came on my car when I got it had the outsides worn at first. Then it started chunking and showed cord quickly. The new ones seem solid but the rate they are losing the tread is really abnormal. I took that picture last week and now the entire outside is nearly bald. That’s just the right tire though, the left front is also losing its outer tread quickly but looks nothing like that yet. I check my tires relatively often since I live in a new housing development. Construction everywhere. This all started happening recently.
Anyway, I ordered two new A/S 3+’s and will get the alignment checked and fixed if needed. Seem like a good improvement over the last ones. They also come with a free warranty that’ll cover things such as nails so I won’t have to pay for a whole new tire if it is un-patchable again. Front and rears are exactly the same size.

If you ‘re able to notice tire wear after only a few days then the alignment is definitely fucked up. Make sure you get the alignment done at a competent shop and GET A PRINT OUT!!! That way you know what it was life before, and if it was screwed up, and you can see how well the tech aligned it. If you don’t get a print then I would almost make them do the alignment again, or put it up on the rack and take the measurements again.
Also, have you lowered the car? If you have you may need to add in more adjustment to add more negative camber. I chased excessive shoulder wear for several years and it turned out the car needed a lot of negative camber to compensate for the very wide tires the PO put on the car. And once I lowered it I made the problem worse until I added adjustable bushing and maxed them out into the negative region.
Also, how do you like the A/S 3's? I’ve only had them on my Golf for about 10k miles but I love them. They grip like a mofo and they’re really comfortable for a sports tire. And it looks like Michelin finally fixed the chunking issue that plagued the previous A/s tires.
And unless you live or drive where it snows, I’d recommend the Pilot Super Sports. They do quite well in the rain, and they have a 30k mile warranty (when not staggered), and their grip is truly astonishing.

That’s been my thought. I just don’t know what I might’ve done to mess it up. Car isn’t lowered, pretty much stock. I love my A/S 3's. Grip great and at least two of the tires have great wear, still look brand new. The car came with the previous A/S tire and those chunked like crazy. I would do PSS but my parents got me the A/S 3's and they had the final say on that. Which isn’t so bad because in Texas we do occasionally get snow and really low temperatures where summers would crack and lose grip. I did just buy two A/S 3 +’s to replace those worn tires and will get an alignment done with a sheet to go with it. I’m not happy that I had to buy them but at the same time really excited to get the latest tire. Seems like a great overall improvement.

As to what happened I have no idea, but I suspect the previous alignment was less than stellar, and got worse over time, but it’s hard to know.
I didn’t know Michelin already updated the Pilot A/S’s. Damn! I just barely got my A/S 3's. Oh well. I’m really excited for the replacement Super Sport, whenever those come out. I got my first set literally right after they were released. I'm on my third set now and will never go back.

I got my alignment done at a Firestone. Who then a year later tried ripping me off 1200 for other repairs. So maybe.
And ya, I was surprised. They announced them at Detroit. I’m excited, especially for the PSS replacement.
I just found out my rear tires are really badly worn on the outside (They were rotated from the front recently) which means whatever has been eating my tires has been doing this for a little while. So the plan is new tires on the back, better of the old tires on the front, alignment and see if that stops the bad wearing. It also means I have to spend more money on tires sooner than later. Yay.

Oh god... Firestone... I actually applied there once (I needed a job..) and the service was manager was boasting about their alignment machine, but I was laughing in my head because any grease monkey can follow a machine (they even give the technicians pictures of where the alignment adjustments are...), but it takes a real technician to know how to set the alignment. The alignment angles and measurements may all be in the “green,” but that doesn’t mean that’s a good alignment. For example the toe on both sides may be in the green, but if one is toed in slightly vs the other, it will cause excessive wear.
So the moral of the story is to get a really go alignment and to check the printout. But I know it can be kind of hard to find a good alignment guy. If you have an independent mechanic, ask him who he uses and his experience with him. That’s how I found my alignment guy (since I don’t have access to an alignment rack).

The first time I went there for my tires and later repair work they were great. Everyone had been knowledgeable gearheads. Then most of them left, and then begins that story.
There really aren’t any good independent places. I go to a performance shop now for most of my work (that I can’t do myself) but they won’t do an alignment. I’m just going to try the local dealer. They’re pretty decent and should have everything necessary to do a good job. I will definitely ask for a printout though, I didn’t get one the last time.
